You made it through the year...congratulations! Don't take it lightly, it is an accomplishment you should be proud of, for sure!
For the final blog, please talk about your service site....where is it, what has been the highlight this year, what have you gained by being there and whether you plan to stay there next year...why or why not?
Unfortunately, Sandy will not be able to make it to the last class.I am not sure Maria Elena will be there either...so it will just us!
Please remember to bring whatever you said you would for the potluck and if you haven't signed up for something yet, the list went out today...check it and see what we need!!
REMEMER your letters of recommendation are due!
Umm this is awkard lol
ReplyDeleteMy site was the fleet the highlights about it was the schedule that it's so flexible that helped me since this semester was very busy the reason why I plan to never set a foot in there it's because of the white wealthy environment it has. As a brown person I feel uncomfortable working and bringing the best customer service to them so I'll just pass but besides that it's a pretty ok place
My site is at UCSD free clinic and I gained how get out of comfort zone and being more friendly and talking more with staff and patients As well as helping me decide different path with my major in public health.Yes I do plan to stay there I like the patients their super nice and very thankful for interpreting for them.
ReplyDeleteMy site was a good lesson for me. I worked for ARTS in National City. Like Abraham I felt like I didn't belong there. I felt mistreated and judged all the time. I would always get in trouble for the smallest things. I got in trouble various times for arriving "too early" when I would only be there 30 minutes early or so. I constantly felt like I was doing things wrong. I was in charge of the front desk, kind of like a secretary. I typed things up in the computer, mostly information about the students. I guess I can say that was my highlight about the site. It made me a faster typer and more patient. Patient not only with others but also with myself. I gained knowledge about the program, how they first started and how they continue to work now. ARTS its a good site just not for me. It didn't fit my personality.
ReplyDeleteMy site is the Cesar Chavez Club. Its office is located in City Heights, but the school clubs are located in different areas, so the challenge was the commuting. Highlights:The Chavista staff are lowkey the coolest people I've worked with. Also, the experience of working with elementary level students has been surprisingly great, especially with Zamorano Elementary students. I felt like they were all geniuses and awesome future citizens.I really enjoyed my service site experience. In fact, my intership is my favorite part of Price. However, I will stick to my plan of gaining skills related to my major. So I will go ahead and apply to the science fleet which is also more convenient in terms of the commute.
ReplyDeleteMy site was Lincoln High and I am changing because students are a little terrible with work with. They dont listen and they try to be smarter than you, when in reality I am the teacher and they need to follow orders.
ReplyDelete*to work with
DeleteMy service site this year was Chula Vista College Institute in Chula Vista. It's a branch of BLCI and I was basically one of the teachers for this years elementary school kids. I have gained a better understanding of how kids learn, which I can apply towards my siblings. I will be there for next year because I developed good friendships with my colleagues. I also don't want to leave and just throw away the relationships I have with the younger kids.
ReplyDeleteMy service site was Rosa Parks Elementary which has definately been a life-changing experience. My service site has helped me so much in so many ways and has helped me become a better a better auntie and person. Before starting at Rosa Parks i had no idea what i wanted to do, but thanks to this opportunity i got to know myself a little better and i realized that i love teaching and that maybe it's something i would like to do for the rest of my life. Although things haven't been going so great for me lately, Rosa Parks is honestly like an escape from all the stress because the kids make you happy and take the best out of you. With no doubt, i want to stick to this service site for as long as i can. I have also done some hours at SDHS library with mrs.Sandra who is an amazing woman, i would recommend both of these sites to anyone and everyone.
ReplyDeleteMy service site was at the Price Center. At first I didn't like it because I literally lived there and I had to retain a lot of information quickly. But, after talking to Clemente various times he was able to understand that he was draining us out. Now, he makes sure to give us days off and have us work with someone instead of being alone. The highlights of working here is helping people with their FAFSA and Dream Act application, because I always receive positive feedback and they always leave happy because they were able to complete the application.
ReplyDeleteI am still going to work at this site because we have future projects to work on, but I also want to volunteer at Midcity or UCSD on Fridays because nursing is my major and I want to get a better experience on the field.
My site was BLCI, it's in Barrio Logan located in Monarch. The highlight this year has been getting to know the students. I gained some work experience and accountability. I hope I'm able to go back next year but I have no clue what my schedule is going to be like so maybe not. If the school week is too hectic I'll probably try to work at the fleet
ReplyDeleteMy Site is at the fleet being a museum ambassador it been a fun and good learning experience Ive learn to have good communication skill n get out of my comfort zone i learn how to interact with others i know everyone by name they are so flexible n they love me because ive been responsible n a good worker. For next year i think of doing the clinic because you can only do one year at the fleet. I recommend everyone this site it fun.
ReplyDeleteMY site was the Mid-City Pediatric Clinic off of Fairmont and University. I had a great time volunteering at this site, though I don't think that I would volunteer here again. While the environment was welcoming and the people were more than generous, I don't feel like I was doing something that maximized my potential both as a volunteer and as a student intern. Most of the work was clerical. No problem. MY organizational skills and ability to follow directions ensured that I completed the tasks given. HOWEVER, in my time at this site i realized that an office space was not an environment that I would want to work in. I felt a little sad going only because I wasn't looking forward to doing the same the I always did. Opportunity to do something else wasn't readily available to me only because I did not speak Spanish. And that was completely OKAY. But moving forward, I think I would want to do something a little bit more interactive and less routine. Overall, the site is an amazing place to work. I learned a lot about office dynamics and professionalism. My review comes strictly from a place of preference.
ReplyDeleteThe highlight of this year was being able to be part of ASG and participating in the week of service with my friends and coworkers. I will keep attending college until I graduate and reach my goals.

ReplyDeleteMy cite is Arts- A Reason to Survive. My highlight I could say was when me and Sreyenth decorate the Media room we turn a plane white room into something beautiful to see and it leave me feeling very accomplished. I'm not sure if I will still be at Arts next year! Will wait to see if I'm strong enough, because you need to be very STRONG to volunteer at ARTS. It was hard work but I again some experience on how to clean and how to create something plain into something beautiful. I also meet some great people. My other highlight is meeting my cat soulmate name Frank. I love Frank.
ReplyDeleteMy service site was Arts ( A Reason To Survive)
ReplyDeleteWhat I've been doing there were teaching artist assistant, cleaning, emailing, and painting the room art space. It feels accomplish when you done some hard work that turn out to be clean and beautiful. Working under someone is not easy, it takes a lot of patience. What I learned there were mostly doing arts with students, meeting and interacting with new people. I'm not sure if I plan to stay there because it doesn't really fit with my major.
Reuben H. Science Fleet.
ReplyDeleteMixed feelings, most of the time I enjoyed Crave-LOGY, eating was the highlight, the bagels were great. I had lots of fun, I got so many of my friends and family to come down and visit , learn Science. I was really excited at first because of IMAX Dome theater. I learned and met filmmakers of the films, which was AWESOME! I then transferred to the TINKERING STUDIO where I served as a mentor, teacher and filmmaker, where I felt more comfortable.
My site is the Cesar Chavez Club. I am volunteer two school fay and Monroe Clark. the good things about this site are location. all school that I do service hour is close to my house and I love my two schools that I am working. both schools have good student and I have a very nice manager. she always helps me and tells me what she needs before the class start. I learn a lot of things in the class. all lesson about how to be a good leadership and make a better society. the bad things is the day I have to work is hard to make my schedule for my classes but I like work in the clinic to have experienced over there too and maybe want change it but I am not sure yet.
ReplyDeleteUCSD Student Run Free Clinic
ReplyDeleteBest site ever tbh, feels like you're part of a family. The doctors, medical students, and staff make it a great environment. Our patients are good people who appreciate everything we do for them. Aside from having a great time, I was able to improve my Spanish interpretation. I'm definitely staying till next year.

My service site was Rosa Parks. I really enjoyed my time there. I was working with a teacher who was teaching 5th grade. Everyday was something different. From reading with the kids to dressing up in a custom to checking hw. I loved how much the teacher trusted me with the students. And also the connection I had with her. The kids saw me as someone to look up to and could always make me laugh. They were highlight of my service site. Specifically, the kids improvement. Especially the ones that were only reading at a kinder grade level to a fourth grade level. I would do this service site again next year. The kids are awesome and the teacher support you.
ReplyDeleteMy service site was the Cesar Chavez club. The office is located in city heights at Wilson middle school. I got to work with two schools in city heights the first one is central elementary and the second one was Wilson middle school. I enjoyed working with the kids during the club because I got to see how it would be if I work as a pediatrician. I couldn't of asked for a better site.
ReplyDeleteMy service site is at the office. I actually enjoyed being there despite all because I learned a lot. Even though it turned into my job I still enjoy being there. Every one that comes in makes it manageable. I will most likely be there next year but I may also volunteer somewhere else too to get a different experience.
ReplyDeleteMy service site is currently ARTS down in National City. The highlight of this year was probably everything I was fortunate to do, from creating and pasting flyers in preparation for our community murals to setting up and organizing different workshops and from being an assistant teaching artist, building connections with many of my students to giving speeches in front of donors, sharing my experience and the stories I've come to witness.
ReplyDeleteI have gained an immense amount of skills, from making phone calls to designing posters and from leading teams to work on outreach to cleaning our back lot in preparation for community dinners. These all have been amazing experiences, and if I was to do them all over again from the beginning (I remember my first day at ARTS I was cutting up some palettes and I actually busted a blister and started bleeding), I would happily go for one more time. Also, most importantly, I have gained incredible friendships with amazing individuals, from students to co-interns to my boss herself, and they all have shown me that the support you gain from those around you is sometimes the most invaluable, precious thing that someone can offer you.
One of the toughest decisions to make in these coming months will actually be whether to stay or not. As I have not made my decision, I don't think I can accurately tell what I plan, but I plan to make a decision that will provide the biggest challenge, but also be the most rewarding to me.
