  1. Goodevening scholars!
Suprisingly it's much more difficult to find time to relax when it comes to promoting events at San Diego City College! From all the discussions we had on Wednesday , I can honestly say that sleep is more important to me because it's something rarely do. I know it's very important to sleep and take care of yourself but in college it's hard to find balance!

For the videos I've watched it's more and more altering to wait for a call and reply to a text because our lives are worth much more! I believe that usually that's not the initial reaction you get from someone that may have caused it was in the accident because it was very quick to think and act. I went on to watch more videos on YouTube on itcanwait.com and it specified that we all need to be consistent with how much alcohol our bodies can take and the be smart on how we drive when we are in charge of minors and loved ones in the vehicle. Also, I saw and researched that ,"95,000 drivers disapprove of distracted driving but 431,000 crashes a year are caused by it", this meaning that some of the accidents occur when we aren't really paying attrition or are impaired by alcohol or drugs!

In sandys presentation, the three things I've learned were.
    1. Being a driver - when driving a vehicle it is important to learn about your car and the engineer aspect of how it functions, for example knowing the elements of your engine, how has to be put in, and knowing when to need oil change. It is important to know what every abbreviation and component of symbols mean , and also knowing how properly change a tire.
2.Blindspots and looking at your roadway- it is important to not tailgate any driver and look at a diameter of 3 football fields when going at maximum speed because it enable you to make changes if in any immediate occurrence comes your way. Blindspots are very important because it is your determination on wether your going on your lane and not causing any accidents on the roadway. Also, it is very important to NOT tilt your vehicle when changing lanes because then you loose control of your car. Before turning at any point be sure brake within miles and stop braking and accelerating , then when reached into the 60% of the turn start accelerating at given amount speed.
    3. Don't drink and Drive- in general do not be impaired by any drug or alcohol in your body yourself can die and cause many lives.

Thanks you all for this lecture!

  3. It's 1:24 am and I'm still up so I watch the video hoping nothing scary pop up because I’m the only one awake. I lay my back against my soft pillow so I feel safe then while watching the video I feel like that man driving with kids is going to get in an accident so I was holding my breath the whole time until the kids got off. Then they boy pop up and I said "I KNEW IT HE CAN ONLY BE A GHOST!!!! If I were the man I wouldn't stay calm in the car!" but other than that my serious thoughts were sad the weather in the video, the little boy and the lady calling her dog. And I love that people make this kind of videos. It opens my eyes and I'm pretty well aware that I shouldn't ever text or drink and drive because I saw these kind of videos online a lot. So I saved the website and later I will pledge with the other many people in that website.

 In Sandy’s safe driving presentation, I learned,
-that your car goes where ever your eyes are looking at
-it doesn’t matter what kind of car you’re driving if you know how to work it out (work with it)
    - to breaks in an accident isn’t the first priority
-You must look straight forward when driving

  4. In the video itcantwait.com shows you how accident can happen when u least expected. It carry important to stay focus if u driving ur driving because other people life matter. But if ur gunna text just do it before getting in the car. I suggest turn off ur phone once u get in ur car to not get tempted to use it. Driving under the influence of drug n alcohol it not okay you should drive at all you should always ride with someone that is not in alcohol or drug should be the one taking you home. Just get a ride like a taxi to go home. We got to stay safe in the street.
What I learn in Sandy presentation it was alot of good information was that you got to always wear ur belt everyone in the car n they have to be correctly attached or work correctly if not they are junk.Especially I have a daughter I have someone to look up to and put carseat correctly. The other point I found is that you got to adapt to any car you drive. The third one is no texting while driving and always look toward to the car that is Infront of you. Put attention in what your doing don't distract yourself.

  5. As a driver you do have a lot of responsibility and you really can't get distracted even for a second because you are never alone on the road. I get that driving with friends is fun but as the driver you must be aware and focused on the road at the same time. When you are driving, a few seconds will have your car move plenty of distance and moving your eyes away from the road will have the car start to move off the road.
What really caught my attention from Sandy's presentation:(1) was that the minimum distance we need to stop our vehicles at certain speeds, are distances larger than 1-3 football fields. Therefore, if you are not focusing on what is up ahead then you can be in danger. (2) Knowing your car, how it drives and when it can stop is one of the most important things. A big truck will need more time and distance to stop over a smaller car, so if you drive different cars, be more attentive. (3) Looking for an out. I do see this as a very important tip in order of avoiding other cars in certain situations. Stopping might not do any good, and heading towards the curb or dirt could be better.

  7. The video was really eye opening. A lot of accidents like this one kill many people every day. Its all over the media how a driver flew off the Coronado bridge into the Chicano park killing 4 innocent people. Besides police believe he was under the influence. It's just sad how people underestimate the danger of not paying attention while driving. We have to be careful while driving no matter what.
    1) I learned that your cars direction is set by your vision. Wherever your looking your car is bound to go. That's why you have to always look ahead.
    2) you have to know your car and it's needs. For example know how to change a tire it might be essential. Plus knowing how much time it take for your car to come to a complete stop.
    3) it's important to not tailgate any car or automobile because it might not see you because of a blindspot your in. It's better to keep a fair amount of distance so you can easily make changes.

  9. My reaction toward the video was curious to see a guy taking his kid somewhere because I knew something shock is going to come up. Then, it was a bit scary when a little kid soul showed up at the back seat of the car, I knew it gives me a hint or something. By the end of the video, I learned to never drive distracted because sometimes you can kill someone else's life or even your own life from getting into accident. WE HAVE TO PAY CLOSE ATTENTION IN EVERYWHERE WE GO WHILE DRIVING.

What I learned from Sandy's lecture:
    - Always put on your seat bells
    - No texting and drinking while driving
    - Always make sure you have a correct eyes placement to avoid from getting an accident because you car direction go where your eyes go
    - It doesn't matter what kind of cars you have, what matter is how you take control of it. Also, it's important to know how to replace tires.

  10. In the itcanwait video, the one that had more of an impact on me was the one where the little boy, whom was a neighbor, appeared inside the car and then all of a sudden he was on the road and was run over by the father of the girl. I believe it had more of an impact because I have a younger brother, and he is always running through the streets in order to get to the other side. Most accidents tend to happen near home. All of the videos had the same message, in different forms. The fact that we have to pay attention to the road rather than other distractions such as a phone or passengers.

What I learned from Sandy's presentation:
    - When you are going to hit a curb, you have to slow down and then when you are in the curb you have to hit the acceleration
    - When you have a rear wheel drive and you are in a skid you have to turn into the skid
    - Don't drink and drive
    - Know your vehicle and what it's capacities are
    - When it's raining, drive to appropriate conditions

  11. The video that gave me the most impact was the one where the mother checks her phone for literally seconds and crashes with a truck while having her daughter in the backseat. The reason why this video was the one with the most impact to me was because I have a 6 year old sister and of course my mom loves taking pictures of her when she's being silly and posting it on social media where all my family members comment and like the picture. My mom has a habit of checking her phone while driving whenever she gets notifications. I pictured that scene happening to my mother and sister and got a knot in my throat because the fact that my mom likes to use her phone when driving lets me know that an accident similar to the one in the video could happen to my own family and I really hope I never have to live something like that.

What did I learn from Sandy's presentation?
-When switching lanes always turn your head to check if theres no approaching cars, just looking at the rearview mirror could cause an accident
-We need to know our car well, know its needs and how it works
-When driving look at the road because if you only look at the car in front of you and an accident happens ahead you won't have time to think of solutions for you to not be part of the collision.

  12. The video from ItCanWait was pretty deep. Comes to show the true meaning of not texting while driving. Nobody is alone on the road, you need to be aware of your surroundings at all times. Don't pick up the phone while you're driving, simple as that. I learned three things from Sandys presentation...
    - It's important to keep your tires looking A1. Check the air pressure regularly.
    - Always scan ahead of you, if possible a couple hundred feet. Don't look at the cars tail lights infront of you.
    - Drive at a speed that coordinates with the weather. Whenever it's raining be extremely cautious with your speed limit.

  14. The Video from ItCanWait was scary, it just comes to show that we as people need to understand that when we are on the rode are life's and other people's life are automatically in danger. Because once you mess up others will too for example the video sandy showed us if you not paying attention your just gonna have a car accident party in the free way. Texting can wait, people can wait, if you feel like it's urgent pull Over better to be safe than sorry, " just saying".
Three things I learned from Sandys presentation is, was once your seatbelt Has been In a collision small or big replace them, also tire pressure is a big deal check them and make sure it's accurate. Be aware of the road don't be so close to someone keep your distance.

  15. Wow I saw all the videos and its really sad how innocent people die over something so simple. What impacted me that most was when the woman who was paralyzed came in and confronted the young people about their reasoning for using their phone while driving. The videos make you think twice and not just for us but also our parents, brothers/sisters, and friends. I remember when my sister would drive me home we would always be really close to accidents because of her texting or changing her music and I just think its really important to understand there are other lives at risk. This can tie in to what Sandy said in her lecture because she talked about "where yours eyes go, you go", meaning that if we have our eyes on our phone we will have no control. Also, something that Sandy mentioned that also ties in to accidents is that one should be going at different speeds depending on the weather. Last but not least Sand taught me that it's important to plan ahead and not just throw ourselves into unknown situations.

  16. Two video's on ItCanWait.com really spoke to my heart. The first video I watched had young people, around our age justifying why they perpetually text and drive, even though they are well aware of the irreversible and permanent damage it can do to their lives and the lives of others. Upon explaining themselves, for the most part down playing irresponsible behavior, they are abruptly introduce to Jacie a victim of a texting and driving accident. As they sit and listen to her story, it's hard not to be embarrassed for them. The obvious guilt they feel in that moment will never surmount the tremendous pain that was caused to Jacie and her family. While many people admit to using their phones while driving (for whatever reason) most people will never meet a Jacie. However, you shouldn't have to meet a victim to understand that you yourself can be responsible for making someone else a victim.

The second video I watched was the one that depicted a car crash between a smaller car and a truck. The video showed the crash in reverse to illustrate that just one moment of not looking at the road can change one's life forever (including the lives of bystanders). The important take away from this video was that using your phone and driving is always a personal decision that can have multiple repercussions.

I also took the pledge which, in my opinion, was very powerful (Roughly 11 million signatures thus far).

In all, while browsing the website I learned that I myself must take accountability for my own actions. It is selfish and negligent to not recognize how our reckless behavior can mean ending the life of another.

I learned a lot from Sandy's presentation. Three things that stood out for me were:
    - Where you look is where you're going. I hadn't given much thought to this reality. However, I'm glad Sandy stressed its importance in preventing accidents in the future.
    - The devastating effects of drunk driving. Such a topic is very relevant to much of what is going on today in San Diego. This past Saturday, a drunk driver drove off the Coronado bridge. There were multiple fatalities.
-Knowing how to drive your car is so important. I know many of us get into cars without actually knowing how it works. Many things that may appear trivial may actually be of much importance in life or death situations. Something as simple as knowing when to change your oil or replace your breaks can save you a lot of trouble in the long run. I learned this the hard way.

  17. The video that I saw from ItCanWait was pretty scary to see. It shows what texting while driving does. Nobody is alone on the road, you need to be aware of your surroundings at all times. I just want to say simply Don't use you phone while you're driving, simple as that. We recently had a incident in Chicano Park in Barrio Logan because the driver flew off the Coronado bridge while using his phone and he was under the influence of alcohol caused the life of 4 people and 9 injured, what a bad scene. Just think before you do it and hurt somebody.
What I learned from Sandys presentation is...
    - To keep your tires on fleet. Check the air pressure regularly. And make sure their conditions are great for the road
-Scan ahead of you, it is better if you do it a couple hundred feet. Don't look at the cars tail lights in front of you. Look ahead of him. and never look back at the other drivers while trying to pass them in a race.LOL
    - And always drive at a speed that corresponds with the weather. If it's raining be extremely cautious with your speed limit. And always prepare your self for the crash and look for the way out.

  19. The videos were very devastating to see, so many innocent people die everyday from careless mistakes of others. Regardless of their initial intensions they have a responsibility once they get behind the wheel. A simple glance at something can lead to a greater cause. This is what made these videos so impacting, the people in the video only took off their eyes for a couple of seconds and once they looked up they didn't have to react. These videos can relate to so many drivers who simply look around their surroundings rather than the road. Thinking it would be okay to just look at the notification they got on their phone. Good people get injured and in worse scenarios they die and they shouldn't have too. It's even worse to see children dying, thinking they'll be home by the end of the day. Since these videos were mostly made to prevent people to look at their phone another big problem is intoxicated people. Just a couple days ago four people died and many got injured at Chicano Park. We been seeing so many car accidents around us and is sad to know that it can happen to anyone at anytime. Overall, drivers should make the right choices because their not only risking their lives but others as well.
    What I learned last week..
-was eye placement. Sandy made it pretty clear that we should always look ahead when were driving.
-was about tailgating. The person behind basically relies on the person in front of them, which isn't a good idea.
-was about the blindspot of vehicles. It was more interesting to know where to drive when your driving next to a truck driver.
I learned other things as well but it was to much knowledge to take in

  20. The video made me think about how everyone is actually aware on the dangers of texting and driving but we all believe that it won't happen to us. Unfortunately it can and will if we don't fully focus on driving.it is also sad that if someone text and drives that person will not be the only one to be affected but also the other people/cars surrounding them.

    What I learned last week.
    1) even if you are going in not such a fast speed it still takes a long time for your car to stop
    2) its better to avoid something infront of your car then to try to stop
3)cars are not as safe as they pretend when they are advertised to the public

  21. 1) while watching the video I have reinforeced my way of thinking. Driving while being on the phone is a distraction and and a leading cause of acvidents due to not having eyes on the road. It os very important to keep your focus while on the road.
    From lectue with sandy
    1) i reinforced my thinking in that in order to drive you are supposed to know your vehichle extremly well. People make fun of me but i always considered my vehicle to almost be like a girlfriend because i have to take good care of it and kmow it better yhan anyone else. Its funny but its true.
    2) i learned that its better to cometly avaoid a crash or obstacle by looking for your "exit"
    3) always keep eyes on the road. Especially ahead so when something out of the ordinary goes on, you have time to make precautions and avoid it completely.

  22. When I watched the videos I honestly just thought it would be like other driving and texting videos, but it actually made me aware more of this. A lot of people don't understand the responsibility you have while driving. I don't drive frequently, yet, but I feel like I know why not to use my phone if I do drive. The video that impacted me the most was the one where the football player was paralyzed after the accident. People with different stories are all over and you can ruin their life. He was on his path to something great and it ended by a careless driver.

    What I learned last week:
    1) Something I had never really considered was when to brake. I used to think that braking was the most important thing when getting in an accident because I thought that's what would eventually save you. Braking is for when your going to definitely crash and it's bracing for impact.
    2) This may not apply to me since I don't race but when in a curve you don't brake and instead you adjust so that you can use your car's speed and then accelerate - a visual would best represent this.
    3) Regular cars are not safe even if they're the biggest-looking. Cars are advertised as "safe" with 5 star ratings but they can kill any passenger(s). A roll cage can really help with this.

    ReplyDelete
  23. After watching the videos, it opened my eyes because there's times when people think it's okay to check their phone while driving. Maybe it only takes one second, but within that second, it can cost the lives of many people, including our own. It's sad knowing that a lot of innocent people die because of drivers who are texting and driving or are under the influence. There's times when I check my phone when I'm at a red light, I know it's bad and after watching the videos, it has made me change those habits.

    Three things I learned form Sandys class were;

    1) Never step on the breaks when coming close to be car collision. The best way to get out that situation is to look for another way out and hit the gas.

    2) Never follow the car in front of you, always keeps your eyes at least 3 cars ahead of you to give you enough to time to have a plan in case of an accident.

    3) Make sure when driving and switching lanes, to always look at your blind spots. Not only our blind spots, but also those infront of us.

    4) Know what your care is capable of doing, knowing your cars strengths and weakness is very important.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Even though I can tell how the videos are going to end it still gets me. I get so emotional and cry. Especially when they use kids. With the first video when the guy says he never looks at his phone with kids in the car, he should never look at it period, with or without them in the car. You really need to be paying attention. One thing I learned with Sandy is that your car goes where your eyes go. If your focus is on your phone and not the road you can't see what's coming up ahead. My stepmom is always on her phone in the car and it baffles me that she thinks it's okay and that she can drive well with it. I stay alert the entire time.
Another thing I learned from Sandy's lesson is that you shouldn't break if you're swerving and that depending on where the control is on the car if you need to be turning towards your backend or if you need to power forward. The last thing I learned was that you need to always have an out and that you should know your capabilities depending on the car.

  25. After watching the videos, Ijust wish more people got to see them. It's shocking how people try to excuse what endangers so many lives unnecessarily. As a biker, I see people on their phones while driving ALL the time, which I think makes me realize how important it is to pay attention to the road all the time.

    Three things I learned:
1- Even the best drivers can have problems while driving, especially when they drive a car they haven't driven before
2- Where your eyes look, that's where you'll go. It's crazy how I never realized this, especially as a biker, but now that I think back to it, I have experienced this before, even while on the bike
3- Have a way out. Whenever something scary happens, always find a way out of danger. You see some crazy things on the road while you are on it, so you have to ALWAYS pay attention to the road. Especially when sudden movements (braking or accelerating) because there are more common than sudden changes lane

    ReplyDelete
  26. I learned a lot of things such as driving to the left and to the right, also learned about trucks, lastly also not to look at other cars when your driving because your eye placement can determine where you end up.
the videos was really effective. I show my mom and my brother because he always talk to his phone during the driving. and my mom d not scared about the bike but I always tell them to be careful. After watch the video I really understand how important to careful during driving. I learned about where is the direction to look also do not use the break when you really need it.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The video was helpful this made me see what I had to be focused on while driving as well what I need to stay off. I especially got a lot of knowledge from Nelson on how truck drivers see us through there mirrors it has been help full. As sandy explained last week what we have to be focused on not on just others but what is in front of the car and how to react not to step on the break to control your focuse on the steering wheel and the gas level your on.
